Outside/In Book Design

OUTSIDE / IN: An Exploration into the Pigmentation of Plants takes readers on a captivating journey into the unseen world of plant coloration. Inspired by the groundbreaking research of botanist David Lee, the book delves into the intricate structures of petals and leaves sourced from Miami’s Tropical Botanic Garden. These vibrant specimens reveal the sophisticated ways plants absorb and reflect light, harnessing it as an energy source and visual signal essential for survival. From ancient rituals to the vibrant palettes of classical painters and today’s horticultural innovations, plant color has profoundly shaped human history and culture, weaving its influence across disciplines and eras.

Produced in collaboration with The Center for Subtropical Affairs, Make_Good_Design, Miami Botan, and Fairchild Tropical Gardens, OUTSIDE / IN showcases vivid microscopic images captured by Jack D. Hahn and color swatches named by Amanda Keeley. Designed by Brett Oliveri, with inspiration drawn from the iconic work of landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, the book is both a scientific exploration and an artistic homage. With contributions by Casey Zap and Daniel Perlin, this beautifully crafted publication invites readers to marvel at the hidden complexities of nature while celebrating Miami’s tropical sanctuary—a last wild heart teeming with life and light. Special thanks to Oggetti for making this project possible.
